When a car owes you more than it is worth running, you have three exits: sell it whole, weigh it in for scrap, or break it for parts. Breaking is the most work and usually the most money. Here is what it actually involves.

When breaking beats scrapping

Scrap value is driven by weight and metal prices. Parts value is driven by demand. A car with a tired body but a good engine, straight panels in a common colour, unmarked alloys or a sought-after interior can be worth several times its scrap price sold as parts. The trade-off is time: stripping, photographing, listing, and posting parts over weeks or months rather than one phone call to a scrap yard.

Breaking makes most sense when the car is a common model with strong parts demand, or a rarer car whose parts are hard to find. It makes least sense on a rotten shell of something nobody is fixing any more.

Which parts actually sell

From experience across the parts trade, the consistent sellers are:

• Engines and gearboxes, especially with evidence of mileage and running condition
• Body panels and lights in common colours, because accident repairs never stop
• Alloy wheels, individually or as sets
• Interior parts: seats, trim, switchgear, infotainment
• Mechanical consumable housings that dealers only sell new at painful prices

The paperwork

Tell the DVLA what is happening to the car. If the vehicle is going off the road while you break it, it needs a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). Once the shell is disposed of, that has to go through an Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues a Certificate of Destruction. Keep the V5C accurate throughout: an untaxed, uninsured car that DVLA still thinks is on the road is a fine waiting to happen.
